Illustrated London News depictions of the Anglo-Sudan War of 1884

These two pages of The Illustrated London News show scenes of imperial military expeditions and battle that ran around the time of Yano Fumio’s visit to England, where he first saw this publication. In themes, and to some extent in their appearance, these illustrations anticipate those which appeared later in The Wartime Graphic.

Both images ran in the issue of March 15, 1884. The original caption of the image on the left reads “The Soudan: the naval brigade marching through the bazaar at Souakim.”
