Illustrations from the
Fūzoku Gahō, Japan’s first graphic magazine
The color image is the cover illustration of a special edition of Fūzoku Gahō
published
in
1894 during
the
Sino-Japanese
War,
showing
Japanese
troops
rushing
into
battle.
This
magazine
was
generally
more
concerned
with
images
of
daily
life
than
in
depictions
of
war
and
empire.
In
early
editions,
in
particular,
it
delighted
in
illustrating
the
contrast
between
Western
and
what
it
saw
as
traditional
Japanese
modes
of
fashion
or
action.
The
two
black-and-white
illustrations
here
offer
examples
from
the issues
of
May
10,
1889
(right, middle)
and
December
10,
1889
(far right),
the
first
year
of
publication.
