Recitation and Oral Communication
Recitation evaluation counts for 20% of the total grade, and will be based on attendance, preparation, contributions to discussion, and any written or oral assignments, including:
- 2 analysis exercises (2–3 pages each). The two exercises together must total at least five pages.
- At least twice during the term, students must contribute three bibliographic references, not already on the syllabus, to the class wiki.
- TAs will set requirements for oral participation in their sections.
Papers
There will be 3 papers (5 pages each) which will count for 60% of the total grade.
Guidelines for Revisions (PDF)
The three papers together must total at least fifteen pages. Either the first or second paper must be rewritten and resubmitted. This is required of all students to fulfill the CI requirement and students who fail to submit 20 pages of written work and a substantive revision will fail the course. You will be expected to revise your first paper; your TA may grant permission to revise your second paper instead (or in addition). Your grade for the revised paper will be the average of the grades for the two versions. (Note that revised papers are held to a higher standard.)
Final Project
The final project will count for 20% of the total grade.
Service Learning Option
Students choosing this option will work with the Public Service Center and Prof. Haslanger to identify a community partner. The student will work with the community partner to identify clear goals and expectations of collaboration. The student will identify a contribution that can be made to the organization based on the learning opportunities provided in the course and will use this experience as a basis for a written report analyzing the experience.
Media Option
Students choosing this option will create a pamphlet, lesson plan, wiki or webpage in which he or she (a) introduces a moral question concerning food choices or food policy, (b) provides material that presents arguments on different sides of the issue, and (c) outlines the arguments on each side in their strongest (most plausible) form and (d) gives a brief evaluation of the arguments and draws conclusions, where possible. (If a lesson plan, the product should also include an activity that will prompt reflection or discussion.) The product should also provide information about where to find more information on the topic.
